Getting a decent night’s sleep can be tough. Often, we feel as if there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done, and end up on our laptops or phones in bed at 2am until we fall asleep – just to get rudely awoken by the alarm a few hours later. Getting through a day of work after a poor night’s sleep becomes nearly impossible, with levels of concentration, alertness and focus reduced, and the amount typically eaten during the day increasing. New research from the Global Council on Brain Health has revealed that sleeping well becomes harder as we age, due to our sleep patterns changing. As a result, people become more vulnerable to waking up in the night and earlier in the morning. What’s more, those who regularly don’t get enough shut-eye are at higher risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. James Goodwin, Chief scientist at Age UK, said: ‘Sleeping is something we all tend to take for granted, but we really have to wise up to … [Read more...] about How to get to sleep: 11 tips for getting a decent night’s sleep

Just when you thought that the ‘clean’ phenomenon couldn’t infiltrate any more areas of your life, a new health craze is set to have us rethinking our wellness game during the midnight hours. Clean sleeping has been touted as the next big health trend for 2017, and it’s even been backed by lifestyle guru Gwyneth Paltrow. According to Paltrow, if you’ve hit midlife and are finding yourself irritable, anxious or stressed, the issue may not be because of a bad waking lifestyle, it might be because you’re not getting enough good quality sleep at night. “The lifestyle I lead is based not just on clean eating, but also on clean sleeping: at least seven or eight hours of good, quality sleep — and ideally even ten,” says Paltrow. “Sleep plays such a powerful role in determining your appetite and energy levels that I believe it should be your first priority — even before you think about your diet.” Gwyneth recommends the … [Read more...] about Clean sleeping is set to be the the smug new wellness trend for 2017
Sleep apnoea is a condition that you could have lived with for years without even knowing it. The longer you live and the more you grow up as an individual, the more you start to learn about yourself physically and mentally. As someone who constantly dozed off in classes in high school and on daily commutes to lectures in college, I never considered those instances as anything more than last ditched efforts to catch up on hours of sleep lost the night before. But these tendencies spilled over into something more troubling. During a recent summer holiday with a few close friends, they brought my attention to the fact that I was snoring disturbingly loudly in my sleep and my breathing would occasionally cease. Since that trip, I’ve been stubbornly coasting around a conclusion that may have been foregone for years. It was the realisation of the very high probability that all of these unusual events were the result of sleep apnoea What exactly is sleep apnoea In short, sleep apnoea … [Read more...] about What is sleep apnoea? The new iPhone SE and iPad Pro will be available to customers in the UK from today. Tech giant, Apple, unveiled its special edition iPhone at an event in California on March 21 alongside an upgraded iPad. The new model with a 4” screen is a smaller, cheaper model with the same design as the iPhone 5s that was launched in 2012. Despite the lower starting price tag of £359, the SE features an A9 chip, the 3D touch pressing system, and is also capable of shooting 4K video. New features include a mode called ‘Night shift’ that lowers the amount of blue light in the screen at night to aid better sleep. It is the first time in Apple’s history that they have launched an iPhone that hasn’t followed the numbered-naming system. Apple traditionally updates the iPhone range once a year in September but despite the new product many still believe the iPhone 7 will be announced in September 2016. The new release will sit beside the 6s, 6 and 5s models in the … [Read more...] about Apple’s new iPhone SE and iPad Pro go on sale in the UK
We all know that we’re supposed to get 7-8 hours of sleep per night, but when it comes to sleep it's not just the quantity that matters - it's the quality too. Luckily there are a handful of tips that experts swear by to help combat all manner of sleep problems. Eliminate street noise Any Londoner … [Read more...] about 6 science-backed tips to help you get a better night’s sleep
Many of us are guilty at staying up a little bit later than we should because we’re busy refreshing our smartphones. With the lure of Twitter and Netflix, it can be difficult to switch off – and unnatural light from phone and tablet screens is supposedly not good for your sleeping pattern. However, a new feature on Apple’s latest iOS software could help you get a better night’s sleep if you’re an evening iPhone or iPad user. iOS 9.3, available to download immediately, brings a Night Shift setting which changes the colour settings of your Apple device screen depending on what time of the day it is. During the day, iPhones with Night Shift will display bright, cool, blue hues, and in the evening it will use warm, orange hues that don’t take as much of a toll on your brain as it winds down for the night. It’s thought that orange hues are more in tune with our natural ‘circadian rhythms’ – before the advent of electricity, our … [Read more...] about Apple iOS 9.3 released – and with Night Shift it could help you sleep better
Imagine being in constant pain, so much so that you can’t work, you can’t walk around town, you can’t lift things, you can’t even find a restful position to sleep in. Imagine that every medicine your doctor prescribes to you is either too weak to make a difference or comes with crippling side effects. Now imagine knowing there is a medicine available that can ease your pain, allow you to work, move around relatively comfortably and help you sleep through the night. But there’s one downside: it’s illegal. What do you do? Do you live with the agony and fatigue or break the law? That’s the desperate dilemma that tens of thousands of British citizens face because it is illegal for doctors to prescribe medicinal forms of cannabis to their patients, despite mounting evidence that it can be an effective treatment for certain illnesses. Last month, I met half a dozen young campaigners from the United Patients Alliance who suffer from a range of … [Read more...] about Nick Clegg: Give doctors the right to prescribe cannabis for those in real pain

Don't look now, but Kristin Cavallari totally drank the crazy punch. We met up with The Hills understudy star last night at the Rock the Kasbah charity gala in Hollywood, and she insisted that The Hills "is the No. 1 show and we are doing really well." We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but The Hills' ratings are most assuredly down this season, by an average of more than 30 percent overall. (The season started out weak with 2.1 million and sank to 1.72 million last Tuesday.) Still, when asked about the lower ratings, Kristin insisted: "No, they are not! We had one drop because of the Hip Hop awards on VH1, but then they went up the next week." Whatever helps you sleep through the night, sweet girl! (Hopefully without Justin Bobby.) In recent weeks, The Hills' ratings drop has received quite a lot of press, with many critics blaming Kristin's replacement of Lauren Conrad for the dip. Kristin calls that assertion unfair... "At the end of the day it's not up to me to make a great TV … [Read more...] about Kristin Cavallari Thinks The Hills Is Bigger Than Grey’s Anatomy
Dear Ted:First I'd like to say congrats on being off cigarettes, you're an inspiration. I know you can tell us better than anyone, what's the dish on Heather Morris and Naya Rivera? No lesbionic tendencies in their über-close friendship? Is there anything to hate about these two? Love reading you, Ted!—Gleek Dear Lip Lock Ladies:Hardly, doll. Naya is totally into the fellahs. And Heather, too. These ladies leave all of their spit swappin' with the same sex on the boob tube. As for your second Q, it's up to you to decide if dirty deets concerning these two chicks would make you want to rip their hair out. Me? Love ‘em! Dear Ted:Was thinking today as I took my afternoon siesta that perhaps Will Smith was the one being sued by the "female" a while back for the STD and that is now what is causing his marital "non"-issues…Could that be possible? Whatever happened to that story—seemed to fall off the face of the earth, which seems very suspect!—B RELATED: … [Read more...] about Morning Bitch-Back! Dear Ted:Love your column, read it everyday. My question is about Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber. I think it is ridiculous that his fans are being so psychotic about the two cuties possibly hooking up. They are two little hotties in Hollywood; it would only be natural that something happen, right? Do you think they are actually dating and can possibly keep it on the down low? –Megan Dear Puppy Love:I think they are totally adorable together, M. Bieber fans need to back the ef off! Selena is a way sweet, normal gal. If Justin is happy, then his tweeps should be too, no? Sure, they are dating, but like all things in Young Hollywood, I doubt it'll last too long. Bieber strikes me as the type who can't be tamed just yet. Dear Ted:Happy New Year! Are Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin as blissful as she paints them out to be? She is on the cover of Good Housekeeping and refers to him more than she normally does. I know the Oscars are coming up, and a little self-promotion is going on. … [Read more...] about Bitch-Back!: How Hot Are Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez?

Or are there more? And would it be out of the question for you to tell us at least one B.V. name who is in the running? —SJC Dear Oscar Worthy or Vicey:Only three, you are quite correct, how pathetically disappointing! Although there are one or two more potential candidates, for sure. And just because the Oscars always put me in such a fabulously gay mood, maybe I'll reveal one Oscar Vice contender: Could Sheila Slurp-Never possibly be on this list?
