"He who controls Kandahar, controls Afghanistan" - at least that's how the saying goes there. In that respect, the murder of Ahmad Wali Karzai by a suspected Taliban "sleeper" among his bodyguards raises the question once more: who is in charge in Afghanistan? Ahmad Wali Karzai was one of the most enigmatic political figures in the country. He was needed by many - from Pashtun families in need of help on the one hand, to NATO on the other. Karzai tried to make himself indispensible to everyone. But he was a dubious figure, and he was considered highly corrupt. Ahmad Wali Karzai often made bigger headlines in the contested southern part of the country than his older brother, President Hamid Karzai, made in the capital, Kabul. Their relationship was seen as close - contrary to western media, Hamid Karzai never referred to his half-brother as such; always simply his brother. The two shared a father, Abdul Ahad Karzai, who was an important figure during the time of Afghan King Zahir … [Read more...] about With Ahmad Wali Karzai dead, who will pull the strings in Kandahar?
An already bloody government attempt to suppress public protests in Syria appears to be escalating. Almost two years before Republican voters in Nevada on Tuesday will get their pick for the Republican nomination, Las Vegas gambling mogul Sheldon Adelson held his own caucus. The GOP mega donor, who in 2012 put down close to $100 million (90 million euros) of his own money to get a Republican elected to the White House, held a glitzy multi-day confab summoning conservative presidential hopefuls to Sin City's Venetian, a place he owns and operates. What was off the cuff dubbed the "Sheldon Primary" was officially the March 2014 spring meeting of the Republican Jewish Coalition. Son of impoverished Eastern European Jewish immigrants, Sheldon Adelson, an 82-year-old Boston-born right-wing pro-Israel foreign policy hawk without a college degree, has come a long way from having to sleep on floors. Today a $27 billion wealth amassed via moneys from his gambling empire, which spans the entire globe from Las Vegas to Macau off the Chinese mainland, doesn't just buy the finest linen. It … [Read more...] about Powerful casino magnate Adelson pulling the strings
Nothing happens without Havana and Washington. Cuba and the United States are fighting a new cold war in Venezuela. Both are cooperating with President Nicolas Maduro's government, but in different ways. It is a paradox directly linked to Venezuela's oil resources - one that has only served to strengthen President Nicolas Maduro's power. Despite tightening sanctions against the government in Caracas, Washington continues to import some 750,000 barrels of Venezuelan oil each day. The Chamber of Commerce estimates that the US imported a total of $10 billion (8.5 billion euros) worth of oil from Venezuela in 2016. Although that amount is roughly one-third less than it imported in 2015, the US remains the world's largest purchaser of Venezuelan oil. Cuban bodyguards Cuba, too, is dependent upon Venezuela's vast petroleum resources. In return for subsidized oil - 40,000 barrels a day - Havana sends doctors, intelligence officials and diplomats to Caracas. President Maduro's bodyguards are … [Read more...] about Is Cuba really pulling the strings in Venezuela?
