Mirjana Lucic-Baroni's fairy tale Australian Open performance continued on Wednesday with her stunning defeat of fifth seed Karolina Pliskova to make it into her first Grand Slam semifinal in nearly 18 years. The 79th-ranked Croatian collapsed to her knees after she defeated Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and broke into tears in a post-match interview in Rod Laver Arena. "I can't believe this. This is crazy," Lucic-Baroni said. "I can't believe I'm in the semifinals again. I feel a little bit in shock right now." As a result of her victory, Lucic-Baroni will return to the top 45 for the first time in years. At the age of 17, Lucic-Baroni reached the final four at Wimbledon in 1999 but was never able to build on that early success. Within years, she left the sport as she fled an abusive father and suffered money and injury problems and did not play another Grand Slam match until 2010. Serena Williams advanced to the US Open quarterfinals on Sunday after a straight-set 6-3, 6-3 victory over US 19th seed Madison Keys. Keys, 20, almost matched Williams' booming serve but made more mistakes - 19 unforced errors to just six for Williams, including six double-faults - most of them coming at inopportune times, including match point. The victory puts Serena in a final-eight clash with sister and 23rd seed Venus, who earlier defeated Estonian Anett Kontaveit 6-2, 6-1. Serena, who holds all four major tennis titles, is now three wins shy of completing the first calendar-year Grand Slam since German Steffi Graf in 1988. She added she didn't want to be "a … [Read more...] about US Open quarters sets up Serena vs. Venus showdown
Roger is not there, neiher is Serena. Well actually she is, but she is pregnant, so she is in the stands watching her sister Venus' games. The presence of Federer and Williams is being missed at Roland Garros this year. Maria Sharapova wasn't granted a wild card after her doping ban and Angelique Kerber fell in the first round.
