Hollywood couple George and Amal Clooney have celebrated their first wedding anniversary. The couple enjoyed a special dinner at Sunset Tower Hotel’s Tower Bar to commemorate one year together, something George described as “beautiful”. "We sure are having fun,” the 54-year-old actor told People. “We had a beautiful anniversary, and we're having fun." When asked if he had learned anything from marital life, he said that he could not disclose the information as it would upset Amal. "That's a good question, but I can't officially tell you any of those things because that would be wrong, and she would be upset that I told anyone what I've learned," he said. Human rights lawyer Amal looked stunning as she stepped out in a green Versace dress and strappy heels to accompany her husband to the anniversary screening of his film O Brother, Where Art Thou? at the Lincoln Center for the New York Film Festival on Tuesday. The couple "held hands and [were] arm in arm" … [Read more...] about George Clooney on his first wedding anniversary to Amal: ‘We sure are having fun’

There’s a feeling of damage-limitation surrounding the release of Fantastic Four. The film’s leading man, Miles Teller, has been bracing himself: “Rarely are films of this size critically well received …” There are rumours that the studio (Fox) forced the director (Josh Trank, who made small-budget Chronicle) to reshoot key scenes. And the fanboys are restive, since a couple of characters who were white in the original comics are played by people of colour. I mean, an invisible woman, that’s believable — but a black scientist! Whoever thought. Then there’s the existential question. The last Fantastic Four reboot came out to a widespread “Meh” in 2005. Isn’t it a bit soon to have another go at a franchise that’s not foremost in the Marvel pantheon? Though perhaps if you’re asking that you may have misestimated the imaginations of Hollywood executives. Still, if Teller believes critics will take against the … [Read more...] about Fantastic Four, film review
In the real world, the subject of mail-order brides is kinda creepy for many reasons. In movies, however, it's simply a canvas for cute films about love at first sight. In this almost-cute movie, two bachelor brothers (Tim Blake Nelson and David Arquette, both adept at the "bumpkin" routine) lose their mother (and her cooking and cleaning skills) and are left to fend for themselves. So, they go to Russia and drag back a new mommy, er, wife--but just one, for the both of them. What saves this anachronistic silliness from being offensive is the light tone, a genuinely good-hearted approach to the subject matter, and Emily Mortimer (Lovely and Amazing), who's a journalist trailing the men for a documentary. In the end, it's not going to bother anyone, and it's funnier than it has a right to be. Just don't expect real comedic insight into the ways human beings stumble into love. … [Read more...] about A Foreign Affair
Carl Hiaasen's first children's book hits the big screen courtesy of Jimmy Buffett, who coproduced it, recorded new songs for the soundtrack, and appears in a small role as a teacher of marine studies at the middle-school level (what, you don't remember taking marine studies when you were 14?). Buffett has some dedicated fans out there, but given that many adults think his middle-aged party rock is lame, imagine what the young teens the film is aimed at are going to think. Logan Lerman, Cody Linley and Brie Larson play three teens who wage a small-scale battle against a local pancake chain that threatens to decimate an owl habitat with its construction plans. Tim Blake Nelson works his redneck shtick as the ill-tempered building foreman, and Luke Wilson plays a doofus cop. Of the three leads, only Larson has any real charisma; Linley just seems obnoxious, and Lerman does little more than stare into the camera. Though the movie is reasonably faithful to the source, Hiaasen's book has … [Read more...] about Hoot
Lorey Sebastian/First Look Studios Review in a Hurry: Sad-sack small-towners decide the best way to hit it big is to produce a homegrown porn film, a project that might actually be more watchable than this listless, nth-generation retread of The Full Monty. The Bigger Picture: Some things ought to be left to the professionals. When amiable loser Andy (Jeff Bridges) dragoons his barmates for his latest crackpot scheme—an adult film in which the cast and crew are all locals—the task at hand seems insurmountable. Finding local actors with the proper—ahem—attributes is tough enough, let alone getting the cameras to roll. Even making bad movies takes a prodigious amount of effort, something anyone who worked on The Amateurs could surely tell you. But hard work just isn't enough, nor is an overweening desire to please much of an actual crowdpleaser. There's a stellar cast here—Bridges, Tim Blake Nelson, Joe Pantoliano, even Ted Danson—and they've all got … [Read more...] about The Amateurs
Russian Look/ZUMA Press, Paul Fenton/ZUMA Press, Zuma Will Smith never struck us as a Bangles fan, but he is about to walk like an Egyptian. The king of summer is trying his hand at being a god, signing on to star in The Last Pharaoh as a onetime ruler of Egypt. According to Variety, Smith will play Taharqa in the long-gestating production, a pharaoh who was among the best military tacticians of his time who battled Assyrian invaders circa 677 B.C. Not July 4, 677, mind you, but with Smith as star we can probably guess which way the battle lines will fall. The film's battle scenes are shaping up to be ones for the history books—again—as Braveheart's epic scribe Randall Wallace is on board to pen the film, which will primarily center around the pharaoh's battles with Assyrian leader Esarhaddon. Smith will produce the film through his own Overbrook Entertainment. In other big casting developments: Jessica Alba is making herself seen in An Invisible Sign of My Own, a … [Read more...] about Casting Couch: Smith’s a Fresh Pharaoh, Alba Gets Invisible, Sarandon Takes Leave

James Franco may have put out a casting notice last month in search of Lindsay Lohan types to be in a movie about two Hollywood celebrities, but it doesn't mean he's actually making a film about her. The same notice also said he was looking for, well, James Franco types to be in the same flick. "That's something I really didn't publicize," Franco, 34, said yesterday at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of his new indie, Spring Breakers. "We just put out a casting call for a Lindsay Lohan and James Franco type. People just saw the casting call and picked that up and made up a lot of stories about it." Who says James Franco is like Clint Eastwood's chair? Some headlines screamed that he was making a movie about the two of them, while others claimed he was going to direct the starlet's biopic. So what is it about? Franco isn't saying just yet. "It's really a project that's really under the radar for now," he said. Franco wasn't at TIFF for long. After the Spring … [Read more...] about James Franco Is Not Making a Movie About Himself and/or Lindsay Lohan
